What a surprise that I awake to this morning! Up earlier than usual and waiting for a visitor, passing time with email and you have dropped this in my lap! And I read your challenge response just before going to sleep last evening!

Not to brag, but I've been expecting more violence to her family to play a role at some point, knowing by now how vicious her trainers are! And after Tom, I know you are capable of shock... There were hints earlier on, that made me even think that Jenina might have been forced to play a role herself in violence toward her family back when she was taken. But now we have her provoked into her first intentional kills, crossing over a psychological and moral boundary that every soldier who experiences combat has to cross! The parallels to the future Misty being placed in another situation where a mother figure is intentionally threatened, are striking! And she bore the guilt of not being able to stop what happened to her mother, and did what she had to do using her unrestrained but controled power to escape with Cathy.

There is one detail that I am curious about. When Jenina is being moved to this observation torture room, she uses the plural "we" and "our" to describe the process. As in "we shuffled along with our heavy feet" and "he put us in cold chairs" and "he strapped our arms and legs" etc. This implies others trainees being forced to watch the torture and murder of her mother! Is this intentional? Were the others seeing their own version of this session using their own family?

Anyway, wow and thank you for this today, and for the double up this week! Couldn't come at a better time for me.

One more thing, I love the way you introduce new concepts and give us just enough thru narration to understand the role without explicitly going into some technical explanation. Like the "drain". It does what it does without some made up technology to explain it!

Cheers for these great scenes!

Oh Frank, Frank Frank! I hoped I'd hear from you today! I posted this, dying to know what you'd think. Thankyou!!!

Okay... I've hinted before at the death of her parents playing a role in her training, so I'm not surprised by your expectations there, but that you'd think I would make her do it herself?! Now you've shocked me! Also, I never said the guards were dead, and given what we know of Teleran medical tech and healing abilities, I'm a little irritated that that is your go to, but I accept it. I never said they were alive either.

Yes, you're exactly right about the parallels with the Cathy situation, that's what I was hinting at, wink wink. Also explains a little about her actions in that sequence, doesn't it?

Just to clarify... You'll have noticed that this scene is intentionally relayed via Logan, in fragments of deepening immersion in this horrific memory. Logan starts out an observer saying 'she', then moves to 'we', as he sinks deeper into Misty's memory as if he's experiencing it with her, then moves to 'I" as he falls completely into the moment, fully adopting Jenina's identity. I hope that makes sense. The fact that it threw you a little means it might be something I have to rethink. I'll keep that in mind when I do my final edit and compile.

The drain is actually a concept I introduced in a Kindling, if you recall. I think it was 'Volatile' where James gets a hold of a grown up Misty and has her in his lab.

I try not to get too technical with my sci-fi concepts, because it's something that always irritated me about shows like Startrek and such where they have to explain how the tech works. They craft scenarios where it's plausible that an explanation would occur too, but to me it seems unnecessary. It always breaks the flow of the story. I didn't want to do it, so I've actively avoided it at every opportunity. I could even ramble an incomplete list for you if I wanted. It's that much of a peeve, but I think you get the picture.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed this episode. You can expect the next one Friday. Until then...

Lol, I accept that you accept my assumption about the guards. I believed she was going full out at them except the limits that the drain imposed. I guess we both have wiggle room. As far as implicating her in her parents death, I consider Teag and James absolutely beyond conscience. Completely results driven. But since it didn't happen obviously, my speculative side needs to be restrained. Now, about using Logan's POV of Misty's account, I completely missed the transitions. I do recall the point at which Luke had to limit the depth of what he was allowing to pass to Logan. Till FRIDAY!

I'll take that as a compliment. 😁 Though considering the content of these scenes, that might come across as insensitive. Compliment nonetheless. The goal was shock, and your response confirms success. 😜

nothing insensitive about that. When you can draw shock, visceral rage, and Overwhelming sadness and sympathy all out of one entry you've reached the mountain top lady❤️
